More things to actually DO?

Nearly 2 months after the previous post on this subject I think its time to come back and brush back up on this subject.
In the past couple of weeks ill go on a rant about how it would be a great idea for new systems to be put in and or inserted in the code such as politics/goverment/religion. True, yes we have something such as that put in already but at best it is hardly and very rarely used for just that, yes there is religion but it is only used to gain df, blessings and thats it, the main thing I have seen for goverment is templar's guard duty which isnt used correctly half of the time and anyone is allowed to pass no matter what guild or citizenship, and thirdly politics.... non-existant what-so-ever mainly because there is no rp side for this mud. It would be nice to see more of these three things implemented into the game, not for rp so to speak but mainly for player interaction with the game, and most importantly, something else to freakin do. To many times have I seen people leave, bitch, moan (including myself) about there being nothing to do except to grind at exp or do money/eq runs.
True there is fishing to do, but as previously stated it neither worth the effort or the time to be usefull exp/money wise in any way unless you spend an ungodly amount of time to raise it up to where you catch exp/fish on a fairly regular basis.
Hunting.... is well hunting... years ago it used to be popular but it like other things has pretty much died out and highbies get the most use out of it to cure boredome and to hold the highest score in records. In closing for hunting in the end when all is said, to be usefull to any player for exp or money it is yet another endless grind that you spend long amounts of time sitting there doing nothing except typing the same thing over and over for hours on end.
And you of course have your other sub-guilds which is good for more player interaction etc. etc. Yes its true there are guilds in devolpment and have been in devolpment and in devolpment and so on and so on, ditto for areas... It just seems that there is something missing that truly holds the mud back from soaring through the roof in pbase and player interaction.... True the wizzys are focusing on new/old guilds recently all the while players are raising high hell about things being fixxed, put in, taken out, or modified. Some of these things hold point and some are just silly. But as stated again in a previous statement, guilds and areas do not make a great mud, but the whole entire content of the mud is what captivates us, the amount of things we are able to do, control, play with, as well as what we can do to keep our minds off of exping when the grinding becomes to much.
As Tumi stated, There seem to be a large number of wizzys who are inactive or who just plain out do not work, well there are thousands and thousands of people out there who know how to code/build and do it very very well.... hell even certain people from the pbase have offered to do so numerous times... Yes the wizzys at times keep us updated with what they have done and what they want/plan on doing in the future but the eta they give is not daily/weekly/montly but yearly.... and as previously said before.... everything does seem very static at times.... I myself find that I do the same thing over and over and over every day... yeah you can explore but what happens when you explore over half the world? explore the rest? sure.... but cmon 90 percent of the areas are to hard to solo and party members seem to be in short supply as the days go by....
I know I have left allot out of what could be added in or what could be changed but there really is no need too, most of the stuff has already been posted on this post and of course there is always more that can be added in but thats not for this post.

Life is but a dream on the way to death.
I think the only thing Icesus is lacking is a full crafts system, recode the old one - polish the confusing LW syntax, implement things like grain brewing, actual cooking - where are the vegetables? - and woodworking.. Icesus is a savage society.
Where is the woodworking from crafts? Sure wood = a nice beating in Icesus, but people could use it to make other things.
Tree chopping could be a nice touch. Make your own fishing rods, etc. Players like to make things, and we like diversity. And we want a lot of it.
The upcoming crafts as main guilds is very promising, but I would like to try that in my lifetime too.

The problem is the same its always been - short of manpower, capable people. There is ideas, scketches and plans for all nice stuff to do, but while they're not as simple to code as areas etc, "real" wizards need to code them, and it still isn't cakewalk. As anyone who has a job knows, teamwork isn't the most simple thing always - especially when it involves no pay for people who do it, lack of time, lack of tight coordination etc. Include to this the lack of people, we have less than 10 wizzes logging on, and from those only a couple is currently able to do any coding. And from those... etc. You see the point.
Re: Tumi
Well.... I offered to code/wizzy to help out... I dont have experiance with this type of code base my experiance being heavy in smaug, rom and godwars code bases, but I am an eager and willing student... but I got told to go to the ice_dev and make an area then we will talk about being a wizzy..... That was slightly dissapointing, if you want areas I can take you to numerous muds where much of my work is still present and in use.... but ::shrug::

Exactly.. and creating an area that passes QC also on the story-telling level means that the coder is familiar with not only LPC coding but what is appriopriate in world of Icesus as well..dunn wrote:I think the point of making an area Nikat, is exactly that, an introduction into LP mud coding. Once you figure out the basics and have work in place, to build on you can better understand the framework of the game. Sounds resonable to me.

Coding
See in my experiance coding and builder are two completly different things... Now seeing as how I have never worked with a LP base before I could more then likely be wrong. OLC was building areas, npcs, mobprog, aprogs, rprogs, quests, items/weapons/armours, etc. etc. and coding is developing the source code for guilds, changes, etc. etc. etc.
Life is but a dream on the way to death.
Another thing why making something "simple" at beginning is that if familiarises you to the code, how things work in general, what resources we already have (so you don't have to invent the wheel again) etc. Letting someone code something that needs to be maintained for years to come as their first project - no way. Even if you manage to pull the code off, its probably hideous, contains lots of bugs and redundant code - and is pain in the ass to maintain.dunn wrote:I think the point of making an area Nikat, is exactly that, an introduction into LP mud coding. And I guess that also filters out those people who wouldn't have enough interest to complete a larger project.. Wizzing just to find out you suck at it, or don't wanna do it, or you lose interest in early stage sucks for everyone. It probably ends your gaming career as well as it wastes other wizzes resources while they help you out and fix your bugs etc.
(edit): And if you code something larger and fancier, you probably need read access to almost all files, so if we let everyone look at every code when they say they're great coders and wanna do xx and yy - what fun would the game be then, all secrets and formulaes in the open?
Let me come with an idea that would not burden the wizards then: how about introducing player-run mobs/gods/demi-gods? I'm sure there are several highbie-players that know icesus very well and are bored to hell that would be glad for something new to do.
Give them the control over another character, and give them the rights to do things appropriate to that character (for example summoning mobs, giving rewards or whatever).
I'll take the Ratking in vaerlon as example, he's very evil and has his own army of rats. But what does he do? He just sits on a throne looking evil and waiting to get killed. Wouldnt it give a new depth to the game if he would actually think and do things? he could plot with other mobs, make up plans with other forces of evil and have his rat horde assault vaerlon.
Another example would be player-run gods that could give players quests, interact with the world etc.
The only limit would be the imagination of the players that run mobs. Ofcourse not just anyone would be allowed to be a mob-care taker, but it wouldnt be that hard to find those suitable for doing so.
Secondly i would like to see the introduction of an alignment system. It should not say if you are good/evil etc, but doing different things should have impact on it. If you are a templar and go around slaughtering children, towns-people, the whole town of atherton, etc. you should get negative alignment and in the end it would result in you loosing your right of training at the templars, become a fallen templar. And theese points should not be as easy as rep to get up again. This would in some ways make way for more roleplaying, templars are not supposed to kill innocent people and rangers are not supposed to kill tree-hugging people living in the woods etc.
The third and last thing i would like to say is: please start to encourage roleplaying. i don't say enforce, but atleast encourage it. Make some way of rewarding it. roleplaying would give so much to a game like this.
Let the disagreeing begin!

Actually I dont think its a bad idea at all, I myself would love to see Rp an actual part of the game, but there are a few things that I think need to happen, such as A) Yes encourage it but give people the option to do so, seeing as we have a number of players who do not like rp in any way or form. B) Code in some sort of flag system for who orrrr finger or whois, to where you can set a flag that says you are an rp player, and said players with rp flags active should be treated as such, only allowing non rp comments or conversation on the proper channels. Sure you can get further in depth with this but hey

sorry, not gonna happen cos ice is full of players who just play for to get bigger than others then they start to make life of lesser players miserable...as i noticed quite meny players during the years have only gived "respect" to chars totalworth not the player himself..soon if they drive you over in plaque u notice a attitude chance to everyone.
ps:not everyone but meny are and even more will come
