Caravan

Post by torvus »

Well, after Simius inspired me on chat by asking for more stuff to do that doesn't involve joining more guilds I came up with this idea.

A merchant caravan is to leave at a x time. They are worried about bandits/monsters attacking so hire guards to protect them.

Now to keep this from turning into a completely highbie affair smaller characters should have equally important jobs that don't require being able to solo a 300k mob :P.

For example A look out.
They would have to constantly search for mobs, when found they could set off an alarm that lets the highbies come out and attack.
However if they fail to do this the highbies are not warned in time and that particular section of the caravan is destroyed.

Now for this to work it would have to be quite slow paced, lasting maybe half an hour to a hour so that its a challenge for the look outs and highbies to stay unidle and actually guard.

Rewards for a successfull mission could be a certain amount of the surviving parts of the caravans profit, and rep for helping out the cities economy survive.

Well this would be quite hard to implement but I just thought I'd throw the idea out there rather than sit on it.

nice idea :D

Another newbie work could be to:

Feed the animals dragging the caravan.
Should be a more rooms caravan then.

Help to repair damaged wagons.
Random events could break the wheel and with teamwork 2 newbies can lift the wagon and another one changes the wheel :D

Question is ... what do the caravans transport?

ps.: i would prefer to sit in one of the wagons drinking beer and getting a message by a female elf. *purr*

Sorry to spoil your mood... but:

We've had a caravan escorting in Icesus in the good old days... it didn't work, the code was Treax(tm). The idea isn't new, but yes... it would add more flavour to mindless artisan tinkering! Perhaps only master artisans could feed the horses, repair wagon wheels, scout ahead and such... they could have a 10 lvl subguild just for this, how does that sound?

Umm, sorry, I got a bit carried away there :whistles innocently:... sounds good, if you get it to work AND make it be somehow balanced with normal exping...

So, obviously you'll need someone to code a better system than what Treax used. (Highbies having to kill several skeleton lords in a row, newbies getting through without a single encounter and hoarding MASSIVE amounts of exp etc.) :(

So... how about a Lothare mk2?

Well it would make sense for them to upkeep the wagons maintenance, but scout ahead? Seems like more of a rangerish/tank job to me.

Anyways, as far as I know Cenedosis doesn't have too many ways to gain rep, maybe this could be implemented to that area?

This smells very much like the return of the task-manager to me.

So what exactly is wrong with that system? 8)

And it's already ingame, except it's a guild event in one specific guild, and it's kinda vice versa of what you said.

As far as I was aware of the shadowdancers only attack a small convoy, the only similarity between the two ideas is you are attacking/defending merchants.
The job would be audourious and long, not a 4 minute long guild event.

a lenghty quest would be the key - who wants to do a 4 minute quest anyway - over too quickly

I wonder why never mentioned this: there is a "protect the caravan" general idea in use, available to anyone at any time. On the other side one would have to ExPlOrE to gain that knowledge or find out in some other, less gamelike, manner.
Anyways, the good things about what allready exists is that no weakling can gain MASSIVE amounts of exp, doing the deed can take a reasonable amount of time and can be done whenever someone so wishes. The best thing is that it is nicely coded and has FEELING...'nuff said.
I seize the opportunity to praise the wizard whom designed the respective area. Grrrrreeat work!

P.S. I havent mentioned any reward or stuff but thats' for me to abuse and for you to find out 8)

I think Iluth meant, what part of the code doesn't work?
