countries command

Post by haardo »

how about an option to check 'countries party' which would display the players in your party and their countries (if resolved) in a simple list?

We have Educational, Commercial, Unknown and Service Provider "countries" too.

How about implementing some way to list one's own country to forcibly replace that one?

Like, 'set country finland', or like most of the mud would do: 'set country p*nisland' or something similarly witty and mature?

Perhaps new players should be asked to submit their country at the first character creation. Existing players... well I'd like to say that they were mature enough not to submit anything daft... but I'd be wrong, wouldn't I?

We'd see lots of people from Sudan etc if it was settable at will.

One solution would be to use geoIP for determining country, I've even got the database somewhere. The are problems with that approach as well (it is one big ass database).

Currently the countries command relies on reverse DNS, it only checks the tld, so .fi -> finland, .com -> commercial. It's not too accurate nowadays (or never was). Not all providers even use reverse.
