Events.

Why do we have so few big events? Other than those where players compete against players?
I mean, there are evil doers all over vaerlon, but what do they do? The evil orcs of shanty just keep to themselves, the you fire dragon
that should be looting and pillaging prefers his lair over evil doing? And the evil troll lord Krepis is doing a whole lotta evil by just sitting at his throne. And what about Korozerz and his evil minions - a whole lotta talk but no go.
Would it be too bad if one of these evil doers would decide to raid vaerlon every now and then? Or shadowdancers / epriests would have actual events against Vaerlon or Templars against Graemor, I know the idea of cities fighting was hard to code but single events should be doable. Also the events should try to have some actual negative effect if players disregard them, like the idea of Driixtr leaving for a few days or the shops being closed for the rest of the boot... - Just my 2 cents, again.

Ok you seem to be talking of two things: Unique quests and new events. People have brainstormed on both in this forum and other places as well. And there have been some rather nice ideas on the table- at least in my opinion. But the general Problem with all this is "manpower", "time" and "focus". See icesus does not have enough coders to code such events/quests, the coders we have don't have enough time to code new things, and they are focused on other things (Like the new guilds and areas wich are also very needed and awaited things).

Also some of the actions that you mentioned have happened already. The shadowdancers have recently raided Vaerlon, twice. Once even a NPC escorted them with a little immortal help :). But the thing with such event is, there is no-one to organise the events a bit more. See the second raid was so quiet most people didnt even notice the shadowdancers were there (Well eleer noticed :), but he noticed too late, only the guards noticed on-time). And because there is no player-history such events "never happened" wich is the reason no-one wants to do them again.

Quests?

Post by wilde »

I fail to see how you manage to turn those into quests, quests are something you do by yourself or with a party, they start from a point and end to a point and have things in between.
Events run between random amounts of time and generally you should not be able to choose if you participate, atleast in the events I had in mind. And the coding part is always tricky, but then again, there are many people coding areas and the amount of new code required for those events is not too big. And also events do not require maintenance if they are well coded, you just need one wizard to start the event and it will run on its own.

I had some smaller events/contests in my mind ...
  • Mushrooms gathering contest like fishing, hunting, spotting, but the purpose could be gathering a defined number of one difined type of mushroom as fast as possible, the first who bring tjose mushrooms to the NPC (Aiach ?) wins.
  • Inn Addict. Players should have to visit a defined numbuer of Inns in the realm, buy something, and get a card signed buy the innkeeper. The first who has his card full and show it to the dedicated NPC would be the winner
  • Smaller best fighter contest Simply the copy of the Arena challenge, but restricted to lower levels player (under 25?).

Let me explain. Before my time (thus i dont remember exactly) there was a great assault on the City of Vaerlon by the evil earthpriest (NPC's) and their minions (NPC's). Some of those earthpriests caried some _unique_ items that players still posess. That Assault also originated the martial law in vaerlon and the hostile attitude towards dark-elfs.
Such event that only run once in a lifetime and change the world and everyday life are called 'Unique quests'. Unlike normal quests a player does not undertake the quest, neither does he choose if its ever going to happen. The quest is started an run by divine forces (wizards). The players can partake in such quests, have enormous amounts of fun, capture once-in-a-lifetime eq and most of all later that player can say: 'Remember that thing that changed the life as we know it, I was there, i was part of it.'

I personally would like to see more of both event and unique quests. I wouild really like new event based on the inter-city/inter-guild hostility. This has also been mentioned in some other topic before. Events like the shadowdancer raid that currently only involves NPC's on one side are a cool example of things id like to see more of. With maybe templar, militia, ranger, earthpriest and magi on one side and earthpriest and shadowdancers on the other side. Or other combinations including the fauna loving gaessati vrs the flora worshiping rangers, or mages vrs sorceres.

Also id like to see the great evil-doers get off their arses and do some actual evil from time to time. Such evil-event would from time to time remind people that there are a lot of unexplored areas out there, a lot of thing to be afraid of, remind people that vaerlon has guards for a reason, not for just taxing the visitors and greeting the people (spammers!).

A "community manager" could be in charge of such event-running and player 'involving'. Like for example the shadowdancers do sometimes raid vaerlon. But that get boring really fast if no-one even notices it. Wouldn't it be much more fun is the council of vaerlon would alarm people that the scouts have spotted ever greater number of evil-doers stalking around the city walls and that all the citicens should keep their eyes open and report any mischief to the templars. A wizard-"CM" could post such warnings/hints and aid many player initiated events (and wiz initiated) events.

P.S if any wizards feels i have spoken too loud about the quests, feel free to edit, delete and ban.

Others were good, this is not. Winners would be always those of high level in chrono guild.

Or those who have the predefined speedwalks and alias' set up.

This "event" (although not an event by the mudlib definitions) was very much fun to run and watch, but required high amount of work by the wizards (coding the monsters and all the unique eq and the changes in gameworld that came into being after it). I bet you've guessed the problem here... We are kinda lacking active wizards at the moment, so we can't manage to run much of these throw-away things right now.

This isn't to say something couldn't happen. Maybe some dev-wizards could code all the necessary NPCs, items and other things as a team, given someone designed it all properly and got the designs approved. (Read: Propose us something good and find some people to code it and it can be done!)
#define BITCOUNT(x) (((BX_(x)+(BX_(x)>>4)) & 0x0F0F0F0F) % 255)
#define BX_(x) ((x) - (((x)>>1)&0x77777777) - (((x)>>2)&0x33333333) - (((x)>>3)&0x11111111))

Keep the ideas coming - if I see a really terrific one I'll implement it with my very little spare time.

Also, there's no reason a dev-wizard (or a team of them) couldn't code an event and get it put in game either.

Just adding my armchair-coder support to wilde's ideas, the events we have right now are cool, but they don't encourage much teamwork or things like this which make events 100% more interesting.

Been thinking recently that maybe a new wizard position could open up? perhaps most people aren't that interested in coding, but they could work with a set of tools perhaps to become "DM's" (dungeonmasters) for a time? and run (and maybe participate) in small controlled events.

Something as simple as taking control of some powerful npc troll or giant, the wizard would obviously be trusted not to kill any newbies, but he could start enough of a ruckus with other npcs to get noticed, word would spread on the channels and lo and behold you have yourself a mini event where anybody can choose to get involved and wont be restricted to guilds.

A superbly great idea! If the NPC wants he can aslo make a party with evil-players (or good-player when assaulting the evil city of graemor). One thing tho: The spreading of the word should also be initiated by the wizard/NPC. So that everyone would have a fair chance of participating in the event. Like small hints on event-info channel or something similar. Cause it might happen that the players that notice the 'postal' NPC will keep the information to themselves (maybe share it with their highby friends) and kill the NPC all alone, making eveyone else say: 'Wow! There was such a cool event and no-one told me?'
Also pre-warnings would be nice, so newbies would be more careful in those areas and to attract the biggest number of players to the event. I mean if ereldon started muttering about him feeling a great evil creeping closer everyone would be curious and make sure to be online once that great evil arrives.

wizard positions are always open for people interested in developing rather than playing the game...

Something along these lines has been considered, however we're kinda short on people who'd implement the necessary tools (this requires some mudlib knowledge and more programming skills than just basic areas).

i like the thought of duels to the death, each person gets a specific amount of exp before the duel and winner takes all. maybe put it in the arena, in a new area of it.
