to show i actually agree with the general idea, here are a couple other ideas: dancer, you get some bg skills in dodge and avoid hits, good dex bonus, and fair str bonus; village boxing champion, x years running, you get very good unarmed fighting skills, and you start the game with a concussion; spy, you get really good at not being seen, and you get a lot of money, in the bank, and you start with lower then usual rep in vaerlon and good rep in some other city; and last of all, the escaped convict, you get a good assortment of fairly random skills, from learning from the masters in prison, you get very good con, good str, and fair dex, -int, -cha, and -wis, very good skill in just making weapons out of almost nothing, and a very bad reputation to offset the advantages
