Marquetry is the process of creating designs and pictures by inlaying contrasting colors of wood. A simple case would be perhaps a thin stripe of a dark wood around the edge of a chest. More complicated would be a portrait inlaid in the panels of a chest of drawers. It is rumored that certain complicated and arcane designs can facilitate the storage of magical properties.
