When wilders speak of binding essence, they understand that they will be bringing desired attributes of a creature to themselves. But they don't know how or why it works. The most senior shamans know the secrets of essence. Using this knowledge they can more accurately bind essence. Totems made with an understanding of essence can be more powerful in unexpected ways, as well as being easier to break in.
