By altering their own life essence channelers are able to link their own essence to the essence of their foes. Channelers usually use it as a method of intimidation, risking your own life by killing the channeler is a very effective deterrent. As the life essence of the channeler wanes so does his foe's but the process does not happen with mutual effect, usually leading to the death of channeler's opponent before the channeler himself is in mortal danger.
