Crossbows are great ranged weapon choice for the militia as almost any peasant can just pick up the crossbow, point it at the enemies and let the arrow loose. With some training they learn to steady their aim and focus more clearly to their targets. This training allows even the more clumsy ones the be good shot with the crossbows. It allows the usage of crossbows to be much more skill based than being focused one's dexterity like with bow.
