Crossbow militia is trained to work in the middle of the heated melee combat and still allow them to use their crossbows effectively. Skill of quickly reloading your crossbow is extremely important as a crossbowman with just a single shot is quite useless if the fight drags any on longer just the initial clash. The militia is trained to look for opportunities for a moment's breather where they can safely and quickly just snap their strapped crossbow and reload it for another use. Properly strapped crossbow and a quiver around your waist is essential for this rapid combat reload.
