Fire priests believe that pain is just a mere distraction from your divine duties for the goddess and it can be shut out through rigorous training and meditation. Conquering self-inflicted pain through lashing repeatedly with a whip is enormously pious moment for any priest as they can prove themselves that no mortal pain is too great for them to withstand. After doing the flagellation long enough the priests reach a point where they can no longer feel any pain for some time. If the priests have time to prepare they always flagellant themselves before a battle, which makes them seem strange and insane to others but when they see the effects of their righteous fury and devotion in combat they quickly accept this bizarre ritual.
