Once a spellcaster has mastered the use of magical energies so well that he can almost cast two spells simultanously, the study of magical defences becomes a possibility. By concentrating on his defences a talented mage can create a field of magic around him. The field can absorb incoming spell energy, protecting the person inside from the harmful effects of a ball of fire, for example. The protection is not fool-proof, the chance of success depends on the talent and concentration level of the person using the field, as does the power of the field. Note that a successful absorption consumes your spell points.
