This spell is offensive.

The spell 'nether rift' allows the caster to open a rift to the world of the unliving and force spirits of the dead to attack the habitants of the realm of the living. When first cast the spell opens a pathway between the planes which is left for the caster to maintain. The rift is rather safe to use, when the caster is no longer maintaining it, it closes automatically. The caster may also close it with recasting the spell. While active the caster is able to force a lost soul from the other side to enter through the rift and assault the livings in the room. Only the caster and the members of his party are protected by the aggressive spirits. The spirit quickly loses its essence and fades back to its plane after it has done its work and soon a new spirit comes through the pathway. Skills of the Sorcerers and the Priests of Earth help with this spell and it's also rumoured that masteries 'Sacred rituals of Earth' and 'Power over malevolent spirits' help to add power to the spell.
