Punching through an adamantium plate mail or natural defences of some monsters, like scales of a dragon, might be a hard task to complete. Killing anything that protects itself with some kind of armor, be it natural or smith made, tends to be difficult when your sword bends before their defences do. Almost every being on the Aegic have some way of protecting them from harm so an ability to reave their defences down by forcing them into a situation that makes them unable to defend themselves that well down tends to come handy very often in combat. For example while fighting against a dragon you might force it to rear up so that its less defended underbelly becomes exposed or when fighting against a humanoid you might just simply smash their armor so that it moves from its places or even falls off, leaving the protected area undefended and thus lowering his protection considerably. Skilled dhamphirs who use their weapon one-handed or fight without weapons are able to quickly grasp their defenceless foe and instantly cast necrosis on him, presuming he survives initial attack. Reave defences can be used to start combat by using it at your target.
